your loss.

Andreas,
I have been anxiously and nervously checking your page as well as r.f.c. for updates on Susan's condition. I can't tell you how sorry I am for you and your family. I know that Susan is finally at peace, but knowing this doesn't make it any easier for those left behind. My prayers and thoughts are with you and your family at this very sad time. I will pray for you. Eileen
mo miller -- (miller@miles.ucdavis.edu) -- Mon Jan 29 09:01:39 PST 1996
Susan, you and I go back to our "party"days in 1979, remember? I remember the great Haloween parties, especially the one at SAl's garage. You've been such a good friend to me over the years, even though we didn't see much of each other in the last few, you've been a source of inspiration - your personal strength, your intelligent humor, your wicked laugh, and your endless line of cats, the king of which has to be the late "Jerry Brown". I hope you know that Lisa, Jay and I, along with practically the entire networld, are doing all we can to send healing messages to you. Be strong girl. We love you very much. -- Mo, Lisa and Jay
Carrie Leonard -- (carrie@kestrel.umd.edu) -- Mon Jan 29 06:19:35 PST 1996
Andreas - I feel so much for you. I am recently married
and know how much my husband means to me -- even though I can't
say I know what you're going through, I do feel for you! I
hope that you are okay and I think about both of you all the
time. All my love - Carrie
Karen Mann -- (Karen.Mann@naemt.magsystems.com) -- Mon Jan 29 00:46:14 PST 1996
Hang in there Susan! You too, Andreas! Sounds like your new heart is working just fine.
My prayers are with you both.
Andreas, I have a feeling I will soon know how you feel. I leave later today fopr Texas (from Michigan) to be with my grandfather and the rest of the family as he undegoes a Quadruple bypass.
He had one 8 years ago, and needs another one, but may not live to make it off the surgery table as he is very fragile.
I am a paramedic with advanced cardiac training and my grandmother really wants me there to interpret the monitors for her, so I have a feeling it is going to be a long week or two for me, also. Especially after a 36 hour drive just to get there and another one to get home.
Hopefully when I come back, I will see that you are both home, ejoying all the great cooking that home offers and letting your cats know how much you adore them.
GET WELL SOON!!!!!

God bless and keep you both.

Dear Susan,
Although I only know you from my sporadic reading of
rec.food.cooking, I've thought a lot about you in the
last few days. I laughed for a long time about your
being on the toilet when the Rabbi was located.
I wish you the best of health, and look forward to
getting cooking advice again from you soon!!!

it's there. As I sit here, I can feel tears welling in my eyes.
Can't wait to see her posting again.
Hurry up out of that hospital, Susan, that hospital food'll
get you! Seriously, hospitals are no place for sick folks, and
you'll be so happy to get home. You'll be there soon, I know.
... and I'm waiting for Andrea's story about that ring... but only after
you are both home...

Susan and Andreas, we are joined with your rfc friends in
in wishing you good fortune in the ordeal you are ex-
periencing. Stephen and I checked our driver's licenses
to make sure that our status as organ donors is noted.
It is. We talked about it to make sure that we know
how important it is to each other. I donate blood regu-
larly so will think about Susan especially next time
I am flat out on the bed at the clinic staring up at

Very best wishes from Maureen.

Susan,
Congratulations on the successful dialisis (sp?) treatment.
I hope you find a heart donor soon. BTW, I am an organ
donor on my driver's liscense. I think organ donors should
get a small tax break to encourage otherwise ambivilent
people to become organ donors. That's not because I want
one myself, only because we need more people to be willing
to donate organs.
Good luck,
Matt
Marc Fox -- (mfox@realm.ca) -- Fri Jan 19 14:45:33 PST 1996
Hi Susan!
In 1984, my wife received a kidney transplant from one of her brothers,
she had 5 others to choose from. She is doing very well, and was really quite lucky.
Although we live in Canada, the proceedure was done at University Hospital in Minneapolis
(she is a yank). At any rate, we know a great many transplantees from around the world.
Every two years, we attend the World Transplant Games (Singapore in 89,
Budapest in 91, Vancouver BC in 93 and Manchester this past summer).
As I mentioned, my wife was lucky, as kidney can be "harvested"
from living doners. Obviously that is not the case with hearts.
I hope and pray, that we will see you for the '97 games in Australia,
for by then, I am confident you will have a new heart,
will have regained your health, and will be living life
to its fullest. God Bless, Marc Fox

Susan and Andreas,
At least there's thing the Internet is good for -
it gives all of us the chance to care for and be cared for
by others - without having to worry about physical appearances
or material items - just who we are inside.
Many of us haven't met you in person, but know you through
your posts in various newsgroups. But we all care just the
same...
I find it difficult to pray that someone will die for you
to have a new heart. But I am praying daily that God's will
be done. And that He give you the strength and grace you
both need to see the next dawn.
Fight the good fight! And God Bless.

I want to share a story with you that I hope you find inspirational. My sister Jennifer
developed what was believed to be an inoperable brain tumor
when she was 18 months. It came down to one hope for her, a experimental laser surgery
that carried with it many risks. Since It really was the only possible option we had the family
decided to go for it. To make a long story short my sister Jennifer celebrated 12 years of remission
and is officially cured.
So don't let anyone try to give you doubts about miracles I have an example of one in my family.
Be Strong,
chris

Hi Susan,
I'm also waiting for a transplant, but fortunately so
far I'm able to stay at home with my cat, Cosmo. He's
such a great support at this time. I was happy to see
that you were visited by the hospital cocker spaniel.
You must miss your cats. My prayers are with you, and
hope that maybe we both will be able to go to the
Transplant Games in August and get to meet.
Best Always
Karen
PS. I'm waiting for lungs at Shands in Gainesville,FL.

I lost a father to heart disease in 1975; so my prayers
for the both of you, I hope, have a little greater
urgency...I am an organ donor, & a marrow donor; I have
been since I was 18. I cannot give to others financially,
so I give the ultimate gift, myself. Best wishes &
Godspeed on finding Susan's new heart!

Dear Susan,
I've been following your story for quite some time now,
albeit as a "lurker" on the TRNSPLNT list. I sincerely
hope (and pray) you will receive your new heart soon.
In the meantime, take comfort that there are _many_ folks
out there "rooting" for you.
Dear Andreas,
I'm sending you my best wishes as well because I know what
you must be going through now as well. I think you're doing
a wonderful job and I hope and pray that everything will
go well for you and Susan.

I am praying for you too.

Hi Susan!
You have a very special friend in Mimi Hiller.
Although I am an athiest, I will say a prayer for you
because Mimi says it helps. I will pray that they find
a heart for you today. I am waiting for a liver
transplant myself and have been waiting now for 17
months because of my rare tissue type. I am unable
to donate organs myself because of Hepatitis C.
I read Mimi's message in the transplant group messages.
My sincere hope that you get your transplant soon and
get back on your feet.
My Very Best Regards,
Dave Lang (rusting away in Seattle)

Like so many others, my prayers are daily. I find myself following your courageous fight and hoping that I can find pictures of the "kids" to send you, I'm sure your walls must be covered with cards of good wishes and pictures of warm "furry" support. I am anxious to have you back on rfc.

I know these times are difficult for you. I read the
note of your future need of receiving dialysis and
envision you and Andreas may have questions. I am an
end stage renal disease patient and have chosen a
kidney transplant to prolong my life after having
undergone hemodialysis treatments.(01/91). I can
answer any questions you both have concerning dialysis.
I convey to you Susan, my deepest wishes for your
safe recovery and welcome you to the new life you and
Andreas will be experiencing together sharing in the
joy of a rejuvenated life with a heart transplant. My
thoughts go out to you with prayer during this longest
of waiting times: the wait for a donor heart. May you
be blessed with success and may the donor be remembered
by all. Life is precious, both for the living who
receive the gift-of-life and the donor who provides the
viable prospect for renewing that life. My prayers will
remember you both.

Susan - You've been on my mind and in my prayers ever since word first got out on the net. I've never been disappointed by the 'collective power of many minds' concentrating on a single thought - and now that 'power' is focused on you. Keep up your strength, listen to the doctors and remember that you have those dear little 4-leggers at home waiting for you! Also many good wishes to Andreas and the Hillers for keeping us all up to date about you.

Susan:
Hope you got the morning wave of thought support aimed
from the east coast today. I haven't been able to leave
the house since last Saturday - the plow *finally* cleared
us out at about 3 am only to get us ready for about 6 more
inches this morning. And the DC offices of the federal govt
were open yesterday for those who could make it (not
including me) and are closed again today. So here's my
virtual card, again, thinking of you and Andreas in
sunnier climes, and sending positive thoughts out
that way.

Dear Susan,
What an amazing time we live in. Not only through the
miracle of medicine, will you soon have a new heart,
but through these amazing machines of ours, your life
and struggle have touched so many hearts. Though we
have never met, I find myself thinking of you hourly
and wispering a prayer of hope.
I had begun checking r.f.c. constantly while at work,
becoming quite frustrated with the delay my server has
in delivering timely messages. Mimi and JB's page is a
lovely gesture.
Please know that all of our positive thoughts and
prayers of love are continuing for both you and Andreas.
We'll see you through this. God Speed.

Susan, my thoughts and prayers are with you -- as are those of my church community at St. Blaise Parish in St. Louis, MO. (hope you don't mind the Catholic participation..!)
We look forward to brighter days, when you (with your robust new heart!) are once again pontificating at r.f.c. about the virtues of *real* cooking, and the sins of fast food, and more!
God bless you & Andreas during this trying time.

hello,
I'm far more a lurker than an actual poster (so you don't know me), but my thoughts and prayers are with you. I can't enclose a copy of my organ donor card with the email, but it's right there in my belly bag - just in case.
I know that a hospital is neither peaceful nor quiet, but try to rest as much as you can. Your job right now is to get as strong as you can be.

Posted to The Transplant List.....
There has been a fantastic web page setup for Susan Hattie Steinsapir as she waits for a heart at Kaiser Hospital....
It has her progress to date, as well as links to tx sites and a lot of other stuff. You can send her a message from the web page and can read other messages......
I'll send a copy of this letter to her with the best wishes from everyone on this list for a quick and successful resolution to her ordeal. We love ya Susan, keep smiling :-)
You can find the site at http://www.smartlink.net/~hiller/susan/
I read in rec.food.cooking that Susan asked the people there not to send cards, but to send photocopies of their signed donor cards instead :-)
